Leslie K. Brown
Leslie K. Brown is an independent curator, scholar, and educator who recently earned her Ph.D. in Art History at Boston University. A former curator at the Photographic Resource Center, she holds an M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and specializes in the history of photography and modern/contemporary art. Her dissertation considered the history and meaning of the picture-taking sign and its surrounds (the roadside, world's fairs, and Disney parks) and how we are taught to look at the landscape: “The Kodak Picture Spot Sign: American Photographic Viewing and Twentieth-Century Corporate Visual Culture.”
During her tenure at the PRC (2001-2009), Brown curated and oversaw over 40 exhibitions. She has also worked at the Cheekwood Museum of Art, the Austin Museum of Art, and guest curated exhibitions for the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Her recent projects include essays for Sandi Haber Fifield’s book "Between Planting and Picking"; the Davis Museum's exhibition and catalog "A Generous Medium: Photography at Wellesley 1972-2012"; and self-published ventures by John Chervinsky and Carol Golemboski. In 2013, Brown co-curated an exhibition of regional emerging photographers, "Cultivated: New Photography from New England," as a part of Magenta Foundation's Flash Forward Festival.
Brown has presented papers at the graduate student symposium jointly sponsored by the Frick Collection and the IFA/NYU as well as “Framing Time and Place: Repeats and Returns in Photography” at the University of Plymouth, UK. She has also presented at the George Eastman Museum, Society of Photographic Education; Southeast College Art Conference; American Antiquarian Society; and served as the BU graduate symposium coordinator. More recently, she spoke at the College Art Association conference as a part of the New York Public Library's session, "A Social Medium: Photography’s History of Sharing" and has given a lecture at the George Eastman Museum in conjunction with exhibition "Photography and America's National Parks."
Brown has taught at BU, College of the Holy Cross, Lesley University, Simmons University, Rhode Island School of Design, University of Massachusetts Boston, and Wellesley College. She is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the departmental Outstanding Teaching Fellow Award twice and commendation from the New England chapter of the Association Internationale des Critiques d’art (AICA). In addition to serving an invited speaker, panelist, and moderator, Brown has acted as a guest juror and reviewer for photography departments; portfolio review events; exhibitions at galleries and museums; and various fellowships and grants. Last but not least, she is a native of Rochester, NY and the product of a Kodak family.
