About
My project will examine the experiential nature of formal and informal Islam in Fes, Morocco, and determine what it means to 'be a good Muslim woman' in Morocco. I will work with young women and their mothers, exploring key Islamic issues related to women such as adherence to the principles of shari'a, the growth of Islamic education, and public expressions of piety such as the wearing of hijab. Using a traditions of knowledge approach, I will explore the nature of women's agency in Moroccan Islam so that I can better understand how they negotiate and transmit a wide variety of beliefs regarding the nature and purpose of piety. My methodology will be ethnographic participant-observation conducted as long-term, unstructured interaction with the local population.
